> POWER IN THE LAND
A research and curatorial project of 10 artists responding to the decommissioning of the last remaining nuclear power station in Wales. During 2014-16 I conducted site visits, risk assessments, mould making and met the Civil Nuclear Constabulary... concluding with a touring exhibition, several symposiums and a publication.
> POWER IN THE LAND
A research project from 2012 to 2018 with a group of artists responding to the decommissioning of the last nuclear power station in Wales. As an artist led initiative we gained ACW Grant Funding, published a book and completed a Welsh touring exhibition in 2016/17 including Oriel Davies, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Bay Art Cardiff, as well as presenting film screenings and symposiums in a number of galleries including Modern Art Oxford, Mostyn and Helsinki.
'Merging art, science and technology the show presents new questions and thoughts to the nuclear debate. The works present a breadth of ideas such as responses to the often-hidden and somewhat mysterious physical actions of the reactor, the sensitive issue around containment of radioactive waste and to the wider associations of nuclear power. The artists are interested in looking at the site’s physical, political and cultural contexts as well as surveying the actual landscape and its geographical situation. Alana Tyson, Annie Grove-White, Ant Dickinson, Bridget Kennedy, Chris Oakley, Helen Grove-White, Jessica Lloyd-Jones, Robin Tarbet, Teresa Paiva, Tim Skinner' Oriel Davies Gallery 2016.
My work evolved from a substantial period of negotiations with representatives from Wylfa Nuclear Power Station and employees on site at Horizon Nuclear Power in Anglesey – where I eventually gained clearance to spend a week taking silicone moulds from surfaces across the high security site. The moulds later were cast in concrete which resulted in my work showcased in the touring exhibition. Titled ‘19 Concrete punctuations’ the series of concrete relief casts were accompanied by a film titled ‘Orange Buckets’

> ORANGE BUCKETS
A 9 minute film documenting the mould making process of smearing pink silicone on things i found while exploring within the high security compound of Wylfa Nuclear Power Station. This film was displayed alongside the concrete relief casts in the exhibition tour. Thanks to Horizon for granting access & Sam Meredith for assisting on site. |

In September 2017 we re-grouped for a residency at Allen Heads Contemporary Arts in Cumbria to discuss the potential to expand Power In The Land into a more substantial museum level exhibition with international collaborations.

Stephen Clarke charts the work and current exhibition of an unusual art collective; brought together by a shared interest in Wylfa Nuclear Power Station - Read Stephen's text published on The Double Negative
Sadly funding was never secured to take this project further. But in 2024 it was announced that 'Wylfa on Anglesey has been chosen as the preferred site for a large-scale nuclear power plant, the UK government said' so watch this space....
